Chromatography

  1. Get two black markers--one being permanent and the other is water based and has a felt tip.
  2. Cut strips from a coffee filter about 1/2 an inch wide and several inches long. You may use paper towel, but I like filter paper.
  3. Take the permanent marker and draw a line about 1/2 inch from one end of the paper strip. Mark over the same line several times to get enough ink on the paper.
  4. Take the other marker and do the same thing on a new strip of paper.
  5. Place a 1/4 inch of water in a glass container.
  6. Tape the two paper strips to a pencil that will rest on the top of the glass. The marker line should be close to the water. Let this sit for 15 minutes.

Questions

  1. Which marker ink moved up the paper and separated into various colors?
  2. Which color is heaviest based on how far it moved? Repeat the experiment using alcohol or better yet, paint thinner.
  3. Does temperature affect this experiment?
  4. Check out other colored markers. Does any marker have only one color in it after checking in water one time and in paint thinner another time?
