Density
- Place a golf ball into each of the following containers: distilled or rain water and very salty water.
- Try other liquids to see how they work: like alcohol, vegetable oil, etc.
- You can also make a layered column of liquids with the most dense on the bottom and color them with various water based and alcohol based dyes. Food coloring works well for water, salt water, etc. For kerosene, oils etc. use iodine, magic marker ink and paint.
Sinking Ice
- Fill a glass container with alcohol and put an ice cube into it. The density of the alcohol is less than that of the frozen water so the ice cube sinks.
Sinking Cola
-
Take an unopened can of diet cola and an unopened can of regular cola and place them in an aquarium of cool water. If the temperature is right one can will sink and the other will float because there is more weight due to sugar in the regular cola.
