Pictures of Ercolano 2003
This set of photos are from Ercolano which was buried by volcanic ash in AD 79; the same time Pompeii was destroyed. Ercolano was the port city and also had beautiful mosaics. Charles and I visited Ercolano (Herculeum) and Pompeii ruins and then went to the museum in Naples to see the frescos and mosaics that were taken from Pompeii to preserve them. The frescos and mosaics in the museum were fabulous and the pictures on later pages do not do them justice.
This diagram shows the rooms that were cooled or heated to various temperatures and the rooms for the application of perfume.

In the middle picture you need to envision benches attached to the wall about half way up. The picture on the right shows a bulge in the building which is due to the bath inside. This is a view of the courtyard. Women had separate facilities and approximately the same layout as the men.
The picture on the left is of a latrine which indicates that people were not modest and could have conversations with their neighbor. The picture on the right is of a well.

Here we have some fabulous mosaics of which there were many.
