Percent Composition

Cola

.
  • Weigh an empty beaker.
  • Pour a known amount of cola into the beaker (100 g. is a good amount).
  • Reweigh the beaker.
  • Heat the beaker on a hot plate, stove, etc. until all the liquid is just about gone.
  • After the beaker is cool and the rest of the liquid is evaporated, weigh the beaker and sugar. Subtract the empty beaker weight from the cooled beaker. This gives you the weight of the sugar.
  • Divide the weight of the cola into the weight of the sugar and move the decimal point two places to the right. You now have the percent of sugar in cola.

Gum

  • You can do a similar experiment by chewing gum until it is soft and weighing it. Then chew the gum until it is tasteless and then reweigh it.
