Dissolving Solids

  1. Take a teaspoon of salt or sugar and see how rapidly they will dissolve in water.
  2. The water must be the same temperature and volume and stirring should be done the same way.
  3. See how much can be dissolved until just one crystal will not dissolve.
  4. The solution is now saturated.
  5. Before, when it could hold more salt or sugar it was unsaturated.

Supersaturated solutions are made with various chemical salts found in a lab.
Perhaps a local science teacher could show you one of these solutions.
It is interesting to watch a supersaturated solution turn back to a saturated solution by adding one crystal of salt.
