Penny Mole

Show all setups as well as the answers.

  1. How many copper atoms in a penny?

Determine the mass of a penny. Find the mass one one mole of copper atoms using the periodic table. Using dimensional analysis determine how many atoms there are in a penny based on the mole.

  2. How many copper atoms are there in the height of a penny?

Using your reference tables find the diameter of a copper atom based on it's atomic radius. Using the measured height of a penny, calculate the number of copper atoms in it's height.

  3. How many copper atoms will be needed to go across the diameter of a penny?

  4. Compare your results with your classmates and determine how this exercise could be improved. What are the sources of error?
