Phase Change Lab

Purpose:

You will determine a heating or cooling curve for your chemical. Allow the chemical to continue cooling or heating for eight (8) minutes after the Heat of Fusion phase change.

Materials:

• Read the MSDS sheets and follow the safety precautions.

• The following chemicals use a water bath:
  Naphthalene *
  1-naphthol *
  Acetamide
  Phenyl salicylate

• For the following chemicals use an oil bath:
  Oxalic acid
  Salicylic acid
  Citric acid
  Pyrogallic acid

* chemicals should be done under the hood with the fan on.

Discussion:

Draw the cooling curve and interpert the results in terms of energy and entropy changes.
