Stoichiometry
Purpose:
You will be using sodium bicarbonate to form carbon dioxide gas. The sodium bicarbonate can be in the form of Alka-Seltzer or Baking Soda. Using vinegar will help the reaction along esp. with the baking soda. The reaction of the sodium bicarbonate and acid will result in salt water and carbon dioxide.
Materials:
- Get the chemicals needed for the CO2gas you are going to produce with either baking soda or Alka Seltzer.
- vinegar
- goggles and apron
- glassware
- greasepencil or tape to mark gas/water interface
- plastic pan to hold glassware and liquid
- balance
Procedure:
Put on goggles and apron.
Based on the weight of the sodium bicarbonate determine the weight of the CO2 gas produced. Convert the weight of the CO2 gas to volume in liters.
Run the experiment and collect all the gas.
Make temperature and pressure corrections.
Determine your percent error.
Conclusion:
There may be contaminants in the solids used. Find out what they are and make corrections to your percent error.
